You get very little eye contact on a cruise ship unless the crew member’s job entails working directly with the passengers. So if the crew member doesn’t have to look at you they usually don’t. Perhaps they are trained that way. I suspect they don’t much care for the passengers because the passengers can be pretty ignorant.  This young man was different. They were not open and he was just prepping for the evening. He seemed to forget himself and gave me a genuine smile just because he felt like it. A rare moment on board.
